30 of the 41 apps we cover list Portuguese; 23 of them have a free tier.
Portuguese comes in two main forms. Brazil's, spoken by more than 200 million people, is the one most apps teach; Portugal's sounds quite different, and fewer apps sell it as its own course. So check the course name before you pay: Babbel, Busuu, Glossika, LingoDeer and Rosetta Stone teach Brazilian Portuguese only, while Pimsleur, uTalk, Drops and Memrise sell both.
What a year of Portuguese costs
Every app that teaches Portuguese and sells a yearly plan, cheapest first, from the plans on each app's own pages. Not on it, because they sell no yearly plan in dollars: Gus on the Go, italki, Praktika, Preply and Rocket Languages.

How far each Portuguese course goes
Each app's Portuguese course as its maker describes it: the level it says the course reaches, and how big it is. 8 of the 12 courses state a CEFR level; the rest use their own levels or state none. A course's level is what its lessons cover, not proof that you will reach it. Sizes are each maker's own measure (words, hours, lessons or units), so they cannot be compared directly. Read from each maker's pages on 12 Oct 2026. What the CEFR levels mean.

Questions people ask
What is the best app to learn Portuguese?
For Brazilian Portuguese, Busuu for a course labelled A1 to B2, Babbel for grammar explained up to B1, or Duolingo for free; Pimsleur to start speaking by ear. For European Portuguese, Pimsleur's two-level course, uTalk or Memrise. The table lists every app that teaches Portuguese, with its price.
Should I learn Brazilian or European Portuguese?
The one you will hear: Brazil's for Brazil and most of the Portuguese online, Portugal's for Portugal. Written Portuguese is close in both, but the sounds differ, so a course in the wrong one will train your ear for the other. Babbel says the two are mutually intelligible, which is why it sells only the Brazilian course.
Which apps teach European Portuguese?
Pimsleur (two levels of audio lessons), uTalk (everyday topics to A1 to A2), Memrise and Drops each sell it apart from their Brazilian course, and Clozemaster has a European Portuguese collection. Lingopie has TV from Portugal as well as Brazil. Babbel, Busuu, Glossika, LingoDeer and Rosetta Stone teach Brazilian Portuguese only.
Is there a free app to learn Portuguese?
Duolingo's Portuguese course is free, with ads, and Busuu has a free account with limits. Tandem and HelloTalk find you Portuguese speakers to practise with for free, and Drops and Clozemaster have free plans with daily limits.
