Prices checked 16 Oct 2026 · How we check

Is Assimil worth it?

Yes, if you like learning from a book, will give it 30 to 40 minutes a day, and want a course to B2 that you pay for once and keep.

What it costs. One language's course costs $41.99 to $44.99 once, depending on the language; each language is bought on its own.

What's free. The first 7 lessons of each course, free in the app; the rest of the course is bought once.

Skip it if you want a smooth app: most of its recent reviews in Apple's US App Store give one or two stars, and nearly all of those say the app is confusing to use, crashes or won't load, while several praise the course itself.

What learners rate it. 4.4 out of 5 from 27 ratings in Apple's US App Store and 4.1 from 258 on Google Play, checked 16 Oct 2026.

$44.99 once one language's course, in 7 of the 8 languages it prices; French $41.99

In our comparison: strongest on teaching depth and offline use, weakest on speaking practice.

How an Assimil lesson works

What you do
Listen to the day's short dialogue read by native speakers, read it with its translation and notes beside it, repeat each sentence aloud and do the exercises; from lesson 50 you also turn an earlier lesson's translation back into the language.
What comes back
Automatic: the translation exercises, multiple choice and fill-in sentences, are marked. You record yourself and compare with the native recording; nothing scores it. No person checks your work.
Not included
A live teacher.

How a lesson works in a course app

In a course app you read or hear a short dialogue, fill in the missing word, and a grammar note explains why. Drawn to explain the kind of app, not taken from any app's screens.

Plans and prices

Every consumer plan on Assimil's own pricing page or app-store listing, in US dollars unless marked. Per month is the plan price divided by its term. Where the seller shows a crossed-out price beside the one it charges, the figure is the one it charges, and the plan's note gives the crossed-out price.

What it is Course app. The Assimil method of its With Ease books, in an app: about 100 lessons, each a short dialogue read by native speakers, with the translation, notes on grammar and culture, and exercises, at 30 to 40 minutes a day. Lessons 1 to 49 are the impregnation phase: you listen, read, repeat and soak up the language. From lesson 50, the activation phase, you also turn an earlier lesson's translation back into the language. Every seventh lesson revises the six before it. The app adds recording your voice to compare with the native recording, marked multiple-choice and fill-in translation exercises, and a word list for each lesson. The content is the same as the book's.
