What you book, and what it costs

Each app's own description of a lesson and its price as its pages show it. A marketplace's figure is its own range or typical rate; the tutor you pick sets the real price.

9 of the 34 apps we cover sell time with a teacher.

Three different things are sold as tutoring. A marketplace (Preply, italki) lists tutors who set their own price per lesson, in almost any language. A plan (Cambly, English only) buys a set number of lessons a week. A class (Lingoda) puts you in a small group on a timetable, at your level. Choose the shape first, then the teacher.

Which to choose

You want one teacher who suits you

Preply or italki

On Preply and italki you pick a tutor by language, price, reviews and availability, then book lessons at that tutor's rate. Preply sells lessons in a plan that renews, each 50 minutes; italki prices each lesson on its own, usually 30 to 60 minutes. Each marketplace's own figures for this site's languages are under "Prices by language" on its page.

You are learning English and want a weekly routine

Cambly

Cambly teaches only English. Its plans buy a set number of lessons a week at a set length, in a small group or one to one: one 30-minute small-group lesson a week is $144 a year on the yearly plan. The first lesson costs $1, and a first plan has a 7-day money-back guarantee.

You want a class with a syllabus and a timetable

Lingoda

Lingoda runs live online classes, in groups of 3 to 5 or private, following a syllabus by CEFR level, in six languages. Group classes are sold as a plan that renews every four weeks, €54.99 for four classes, with a free 7-day trial.

You already pay for a course app

Check what it sells beside the course

Rosetta Stone sells coaching sessions with its own certified tutors, Ling books online tutors through Ling Live, and Lingopie runs live group lessons on their own plan, with the first lesson free. None of the three publishes a price for them. FluentU offers group classes in some languages free with the subscription, for a limited time.
