8 of the 34 apps we cover let you practise with an AI.
What divides them is lessons or open conversation. Speak and Praktika lead you through lessons that you speak aloud; Langua lets you talk about anything, which suits someone past the basics; Talkpal sits between, with role-plays and scenarios you choose. All four correct what you say, and all but Speak keep a free version with limits.

Which to choose
You are starting from zero
Speak
Speak is built as a course: lessons you practise aloud in order, then conversation with an AI tutor that assesses your pronunciation. It teaches six languages (Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese), with a 7-day free trial and no free tier; Premium is $83.99 a year.
You know the basics and want to talk more
Langua
Langua puts conversation first: calls or chats with AI characters voiced from native speakers, about whatever you choose, in 23 languages, with a choice of dialect in Spanish. The free version gives 3 minutes of calls a day and about 20 chat messages a week; Pro is $149.99 a year.
Your language is not one of the big ones
Talkpal
Talkpal lists 130 languages, far more than any other AI app here, with role-plays and scenarios by voice or text. Its free Basic plan gives 10 minutes a day, and Premium starts with a 14-day free trial and costs $119.99 a year. A long language list says nothing about how good each one is, so try yours on the free plan.
You would rather talk to a face
Praktika
Praktika's lessons are with AI avatar tutors, each with a personality and an accent, who comment on your pronunciation. It is an iPhone and Android app only. The free plan has 3 avatars and limited practice; Premium is $9.99 a month.
Questions people ask
What is the best AI app for learning a language?
For a beginner, Speak, which teaches through lessons you say aloud. Past the basics, Langua, for open conversation in 23 languages. For a less common language, Talkpal, which lists 130. Praktika if you want lessons with an AI avatar. If you already use Duolingo, its Max tier adds AI practice to the course.
Is there a free AI language app?
Langua (3 minutes of calls a day and about 20 chat messages a week), Talkpal (10 minutes a day on its Basic plan) and Praktika (3 AI avatars, limited speaking practice) have free versions. Speak starts with a 7-day free trial and has no free tier.
Can an AI app replace a tutor?
For practice, partly: it answers at any hour and corrects what you say. It does not plan your learning the way a teacher can. Many learners talk to an AI between lessons with a tutor; the tutoring page compares those.
