7 of the 52 apps we cover are vocabulary apps that teach Portuguese.
Each maker counts in its own unit (words, or words and phrases), so each size on this page is the app's own figure, not a common measure; Clozemaster, MosaLingua and Speakly give no count for Portuguese, and Drops gives none for its European course. Portuguese adds one question: Brazil's or Portugal's. Memrise, Drops, uTalk and Clozemaster sell the two as separate courses, and Memrise's European course is the bigger one (5,000+ words against 2,000+). Lingvist, MosaLingua and Speakly list Brazilian Portuguese and no European course.

Which to choose
You learn Brazilian Portuguese and want the most words
Lingvist
Lingvist's Portuguese course is Brazilian Portuguese, the only Portuguese it lists, and has 5,013 words, drilled in sentences that adapt to what you already know, with a 14-day free trial on the yearly plan; then it costs $79.99 a year.
You learn the Portuguese of Portugal
Memrise
Memrise says its European Portuguese course has 5,000+ words, and its Brazilian course 2,000+, learned from short clips of native speakers with spaced review. A limited free version comes first; the full app costs $61.99 a year. Drops, uTalk and Clozemaster also have a European course.
You want a few minutes a day, by topic
Drops or uTalk
Drops teaches 2,000+ Brazilian Portuguese words in five-minute picture games, and has a European Portuguese course it gives no count for; the free version gives five minutes every ten hours. uTalk sells Brazilian and European Portuguese as separate courses of 2,500+ words and phrases in 60+ topics, each $24.99 or $29.99 a year, with a free 26-word starter pack.
You know some Portuguese and want words in context
Clozemaster
Clozemaster has you fill the missing word in real sentences, the most common words first, in separate Brazilian and European collections. It says it is not meant for the complete beginner: it is most useful once you know the pronunciation and some basic grammar. It gives no count for Portuguese, and it is free up to 30 sentences a day.
You want to say the words, not only recognise them
Speakly
Speakly teaches Brazilian Portuguese: the next most-used words with spaced repetition, then whole sentences you write and say with them. It starts with a 7-day free trial and doesn't say what stays free after it; then it costs $47.99 a year.
You want to make your own cards, or start from a shared deck
Anki
Anki brings no Portuguese course of its own: you make the flashcards, or download a deck another learner has shared, and Anki brings each card back just before you would forget it. It is free on a computer and Android, with free sync; only the iPhone app, AnkiMobile, is a one-time $24.99 purchase. Anki's own manual warns that a downloaded list of words and translations will not teach you a language: cards made from what you read and hear work better, and a shared deck saves time when it follows a textbook you are using.
