16 of the 52 apps we cover teach Spanish and work offline.
Learn the Spanish you will hear. Speakers from Spain and Latin America understand each other, but the courses differ in pronunciation, in some everyday words, and in vosotros, the plural “you” used in Spain. Nine apps here sell a separate course for each, so choose the course before the app. Every app on this page works offline in its mobile app, some only on a paid plan.

Which to choose
You are going to Spain
Pimsleur's Castilian course, or Babbel
Pimsleur sells a Castilian Spanish course apart from its Latin American one; its 30-minute lessons have you answer aloud and play without a connection once downloaded, at $19.95 a month for one language after a 7-day free trial. Babbel's Spain course goes up to C1 and works offline in its app, for $107.40 a year. Michel Thomas has one Spanish course, with Spain's vosotros and pronunciation, bought once.
You are going to Mexico or elsewhere in Latin America
Rocket Spanish, Mango Languages or Duolingo
Rocket Spanish teaches Latin American Spanish, and its audio lessons download in its app; each level is bought once. Mango Languages' Latin American course is free through many public libraries and downloads in its mobile apps. Duolingo's Spanish course mostly follows Latin American usage (ustedes, not vosotros), free with ads, though only some lessons work offline.
You only want the words and phrases
Drops or uTalk
Drops has Castilian and Mexican Spanish courses of words by topic, in five-minute picture games; the free version gives five minutes every ten hours. uTalk sells Spain's, Latin American and Argentinian Spanish as separate courses of phrases with native-speaker audio, each from $24.99 a year, and works offline once fully downloaded.
You want to speak, and pay little or nothing
Language Transfer
Language Transfer's Complete Spanish is free, with no sign-up: you listen to a teacher and a student and answer aloud before the student does. Its audio files download to a computer for listening offline.
