How many Italian words each app says it teaches

Each app's drill in a line, its Italian course and its size as its maker states them, how to try it and its cheapest yearly plan.

Our picks

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Links to the app makers' own sites earn us nothing. Commissions never affect which apps we recommend. Affiliate disclosure and how the data is collected.

7 of the 52 apps we cover are vocabulary apps that teach Italian.

Each maker counts in its own unit (words, words and phrases, sentences or flashcards), so each size on this page is the app's own figure, not a common measure. The apps also drill differently: picture games by topic (Drops, uTalk), clips of native speakers (Memrise), sentences with a word missing (Lingvist, Clozemaster), flashcards you rate yourself (MosaLingua), or whole sentences you say and write (Speakly).

Which to choose

You want the biggest word list

Memrise or Lingvist

Memrise says its Italian course has 6,000+ words, learned from short clips of native speakers with spaced review; a limited free version comes first, then the full app costs $61.99 a year. Lingvist's Italian course has 6,143 words, drilled in sentences that adapt to what you already know, with a 14-day free trial on the yearly plan.

You know some Italian and want words in context

Clozemaster

Clozemaster has you fill the missing word in real sentences, through a 10,000-sentence Fast Track in 10 levels, and says it is most useful for intermediate and advanced learners; it is free up to 30 sentences a day.

You want a few minutes a day, by topic

Drops or uTalk

Drops teaches 2,000+ Italian words in five-minute picture games; the free version gives five minutes every ten hours. uTalk's Italian course has 2,500+ words and phrases in 60+ topics, for $24.99 or $29.99 a year, with a free 26-word starter pack.

You want to say the words, not only recognise them

Speakly

Speakly teaches the next most-used words with spaced repetition, then has you write and say whole sentences with them. It starts with a 7-day free trial and doesn't say what stays free after it; then it costs $47.99 a year.

You want to make your own cards, or start from a shared deck

Anki

Anki brings no Italian course of its own: you make the flashcards, or download a deck another learner has shared, and Anki brings each card back just before you would forget it. It is free on a computer and Android, with free sync; only the iPhone app, AnkiMobile, is a one-time $24.99 purchase. Anki's own manual warns that a downloaded list of words and translations will not teach you a language: cards made from what you read and hear work better, and a shared deck saves time when it follows a textbook you are using.
