5 of the 52 apps we cover teach German mainly by ear.

An audio course has you understand and answer spoken German while your eyes are busy: on a commute, a walk or a run. The courses differ most in how far they go. Rocket German maps its three levels to A1 up to B2, and Glossika says its German goes from A1 to C1; Pimsleur runs to Level 5 without a CEFR label, and Language Transfer says its Complete German remains unfinished. Audio cannot teach you to read and spell, so plan another tool for that once the sounds stick.

You want to understand why, and pay nothing

Language Transfer

Language Transfer's Complete German is a recorded teacher guiding a student through building sentences; you pause and answer before the student does, and the grammar is explained as you go.
