Best app to learn Auslan (Australian Sign Language)
Two apps teach Auslan as a course. Auslan Wiz, made with Signpedia, a Deaf-owned Australian company, has over 160 video lessons in 26 modules and more than 1,100 signs and sentences; it has a free version with limited lessons, and a year was A$134.99 to A$149.99 in Apple's Australian store on 16 Oct 2026 ($99.99 a year in the US store). 3 of the 70 apps we cover list Australian Sign Language; 1 of them is free to keep using and 2 more free to try.
Auslan is the sign language of the Australian Deaf community. It is a language of its own, different from American and British Sign Language, and it fingerspells with two hands. None of these apps checks how you sign, and Auslearn's makers say it plainly: no app replaces learning from Deaf teachers and signing with real people. Use an app beside a class, or to start before you find one.

How far each Australian Sign Language course goes
Each app's Australian Sign Language course as its maker describes it: the level it says the course reaches, and how big it is. A course's level is what its lessons cover, not proof that you will reach it. Sizes are each maker's own measure (words, hours, lessons or units), so they cannot be compared directly. Read from each maker's pages on 16 Oct 2026. What the CEFR levels mean.

You are taking an Auslan class and want practice in between
Auslearn
Auslearn was built for the weeks between classes: 12 units, from Getting Started to Conversation & Culture, with 61 lessons and 250+ signs, each shown on video by a Deaf signer, then quick visual quizzes and review of recent signs. The first 3 units are free. Auslearn Pro is priced in the app; Apple's Australian store lists two Auslearn Premium purchases, A$7.99 and A$59.99, without saying how long each lasts (16 Oct 2026). It is a phone and tablet app only.
You want to look up signs
Auslan Tutor 2, or Auslan Wiz's online dictionary
NextSense's Auslan Tutor 2 is a sign library rather than a course, featuring the Deaf teacher Shirley Lui, 2020 Deaf Australian of the Year: you search signs by English word, handshape or body location and play each one looped or slowed down. Its Key Signs 1 pack of more than 100 signs is free, and further packs cost A$1.99 to A$4.99 each in Apple's Australian store (16 Oct 2026). Auslan Wiz's website has a video dictionary of over 800 signs.
You want to sign with a person
Tandem, and a class
Tandem, the free language exchange, lists Auslan among its languages, and its video calls let you practise with a partner who signs. Neither Tandem nor any of these apps replaces a local Auslan class or time with Deaf signers.
Questions people ask
What is the best app to learn Auslan?
Auslan Wiz, for a full course: over 160 video lessons made with Signpedia, a Deaf-owned Australian company, with a free version and Premium at A$134.99 to A$149.99 a year in Apple's Australian store (16 Oct 2026). Auslearn, if you are taking a class and want short practice in between: 61 lessons, the first 3 units free.
Can you learn Auslan for free with an app?
The basics. Auslan Wiz has a free version with limited lessons, and Auslearn's first 3 units are free. Auslan Tutor 2's Key Signs 1 pack of more than 100 signs is free, and Auslan Wiz's website has a free video dictionary of over 800 signs. Tandem is free, and lists Auslan among the languages you can practise with a partner.
Is Auslan the same as ASL or BSL?
No. Auslan is a language of its own, different from American and British Sign Language. Like BSL it fingerspells with two hands, where ASL uses one, so an ASL course will not teach you Auslan. See the best apps to learn ASL and the best apps to learn BSL.
Can an app check my Auslan signing?
Not the apps we compare. Auslan Wiz and Auslearn show you each sign on video and quiz you on what was signed; neither checks your own signing. A Deaf teacher, a class or a signing partner is how you find out whether people read your signing.
